Frequently Asked Questions

What are the high holy days?
The Jewish High Holy Days, also known as the "Days of Awe," are a ten-day period of prayer and reflection that begins with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and culminates with Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). These holidays are considered the most important of the Jewish year and are marked by special synagogue services, prayer, and introspection. We begin with S'lichot before celebrating Rosh Hashanah, and we continue welcoming the new year after Yom Kippur with Sukkot, Sh'mini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah.
S'lichot
Saturday, September 13
The High Holy Days season begins with S'lichot, a collection of psalms, poetry, and prayer meant to inspire us to begin the process of teshuvah (repentance). S'lichot re-introduces us to the High Holy Days melodies and themes, opening us up to the essential work of the Days of Awe.
Erev Rosh Hashanah
Monday, September 22

We come together to encounter the quiet of the evening that introduces us to the first day of possibility. We gather the strength to engage in personal and communal renewal as we dedicate ourselves to bringing in the New Year in prayer and peace.
Rosh Hashanah Day 1
Tuesday, September 23
Today is the birthday of the world. We have arrived. It is the day to hear the call of the shofar deep within us all, to be in radical amazement of the world that surrounds us. The synagogue buzzes as our family, friends, and community are called together for a day of reflection and renewal.
Rosh Hashanah Day 2
Wednesday, September 24

The reflection continues. We gather again to resume our journey inward. The Akedah, the story of Abraham's near sacrifice of his son Isaac, challenges us to our core and defines the mood of this service. Through the liturgy, we seek acceptance of our limits and the finding of our truth.
Kol Nidre
Wednesday, October 1

The sun sets, ushering in the holiest day of the year. At Kol Nidre, we pray with each other, with all of our imperfections, and longings for healing. The liturgy and legendary medley of songs speak of our annulment of vows and invite us in to break new ground, creating space for something new.
Yom Kippur
Thursday, October 2
This is the day we all pass before God - a God who is merciful, compassionate, abounding in love, and forgiving. We ask to be granted release. We seek to be made whole, to begin anew, to move forward with our lives with all of the potential and promise that lies within each one of us.
Sukkot
Tuesday, October 6 - Monday, October 13

Right after Yom Kippur, the eight-day festival of Sukkot is a welcome adventure in the outdoors. The sukkah itself and the gathering of the Lulav and Etrog are the main rituals. On Sukkot, we enjoy the rich blessings of life.
Sh'mini Atzeret
Tuesday, October 14

The traditional holiday when we begin to pray for rain in Israel. Sh'mini Atzeret focuses us on the natural world.
Simchat Torah
Wednesday, October 15

We celebrate the completion of another year's reading of the Torah with dancing and rejoicing.
what happens if i don't let adath know i'm coming to services?
You are welcome to change plans at any time or attend any service without notice.

However, we would love to know you're coming ahead of time to account for numbers and name tags. Please note that if you let us know you are attending High Holy Days after Monday, August 25, you might not have a name tag.

Let us know you're coming here.
