As February draws to a close, it's a fitting time to reflect on our observance of Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month (JDAIM). Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at our JDAIM Shabbat, and it's been heartening to witness the efforts within our congregation to celebrate diversity and promote inclusivity.
Throughout this month-long observance, individuals and organizations have joined hands to emphasize the importance of embracing differences and fostering environments where everyone feels valued and respected. While JDAIM Month is a time for celebration and reflection, it also serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve genuine inclusivity. Our dedicated Inclusion Committee will soon convene to evaluate the progress made and chart our course for the future. JDAIM Month has underscored the profound value of diversity and the imperative of nurturing an inclusive community. By embracing our differences, fostering empathy, and collaborating towards a more just future, we can cultivate an Adath community where everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, can thrive. In conclusion, I'd like to share additional insights from two of our committee members regarding inclusion at the Adath: From Sam: "I've always felt welcomed at Adath; it's been a wonderful part of my life. Inclusion at Adath is crucial for the disabled community. The essence of inclusion lies in embracing all individuals, regardless of race, gender, disability, or other needs. It's about ensuring equal access and opportunities while eliminating discrimination and barriers." From Laura: "I've felt included at Adath since I was a child. Whether it was the Purim carnival or the support from my family and friends, the sense of belonging has always been profound. Being part of Adath has helped me through both joyous and challenging times. I cherish our gatherings during the Jewish High Holidays, even if I can't attend all of them. I'm thankful for our cantor and my favorite Rabbi." Comments are closed.
