Ritt Legacy Will Help Care for Our Elderly Congregants
The Talmud says that kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh, meaning that all of Israel are responsible for each other. This phrase emphasizes the communal responsibility of Jews, specifically their role to step in and help where needed.
This phrase beautifully mirrors the lives of Maxine and Mike Ritt. The Ritts made their living in the meat business but made their impact through their volunteer efforts and involvement in Hadassah, Bnai Brith and Bnai Emet Synagogue. They are remembered fondly for their kindness, generosity and consideration of others. In their later years, they experienced periods of solitude as they had no children. When Mike passed in 1995, Maxine called upon the services of family friend, Irene Bartram, to serve as confidant and advisor in helping her make all her decisions. Irene did so graciously, with care and affection, until Maxine's passing in 2011. |
The couple chose to leave a planned gift in their estate to the synagogue. Their gift will now be placed in a named endowment fund in the Adath Jeshurun Foundation. The Maxine and Mike Ritt Fund will support outreach for elderly congregants of Adath Jeshurun Congregation.
Abraham J. Heschel said, "The affection and care for the old...are the true gold mines of a culture." We at Adath understand this. Our Yad Sima Tova: Adath's Caring Community program uses the strength of our congregational circle and makes a difference by reaching out to members of the Adath community and their families who need help, support and encouragement. This mitzvah is accomplished through the work of our Rabbi's Associate, Congregational Nurse Program, as well as volunteer visits, meals, bereavement calls and rides to synagogue events. The Maxine and Mike Ritt Fund will help to support these efforts, as well as other forms of outreach to elderly congregants.
We are ever grateful to the Ritts for being an example to us all and for helping to ensure Adath's well-being for this and future generations.
