Siyyum Bechorot - Concluding the Fast of the First Born
Following Morning Minyan | In Person ONLY - Adult Lounge
Traditionally, first-borns are commanded to fast in the day leading up to the first seder in commemoration of the first-born of the Passover narrative. When the first night seder is on Friday or Saturday night, we move the fast to Thursday. When we do this learning in the morning together, we can celebrate our learning with food, so please join us for some learning and light refreshments.

What is Chametz?
Chametz is any food product made from wheat, barley, rye, oats or spelt that has come into contact with water and been allowed to ferment and “rise.”
In practice, just about anything made from these grains—other than Passover matzah, which is carefully controlled to avoid leavening—is to be considered chametz. This includes flour (even before it is mixed with water), cake, cookies, pasta, breads, and items that have chametz as an ingredient, like malt. On Passover, we are not permitted to eat chametz.

Seder Materials + Recipes
Need some Passover ideas?
As we gather around the seder table, we retell the foundational story of redemption, finding new meaning in its timeless themes. In the pages of this Seder supplement from faculty, alumni and students at JTS, you’ll find poignant reflections and inspiring interpretations that invite deeper intellectual and spiritual engagement.
To help integrate these elements into your seder, we’ve suggested various ways to use this material throughout the evening. You might highlight specific excerpts to spark questions or bring discussion prompts, commentaries, and readings directly to the table to invite thought-provoking conversations. |
