David and Renee Segal Invite You to Give Life to Adath's Future
In Pirke Avot, The Wisdom of the Sages, Rabbi Tarphon states "Lo alecha ham'lacha ligmor ve lo ata ben horeen l'hivatel mimenu—It is not incumbent upon you to finish the job, but you are not free to fail to start it."
This saying speaks so beautifully to Renee's and my commitment to Adath and our community as a whole. My relationship to the synagogue goes back to my childhood as I grew up in the hallways of the old Adath on Dupont. As a young adult, I re-joined the synagogue in 1984 and welcomed my bride, Renee, in 1986. We have since made Adath a part of our extended family. Both our children, Benjamin and Leah, were B'nai Mitzvah at the synagogue and were active in youth programming. |
When I reflect on why we support Adath, I think back to the messages we gave our children as they were welcomed into the community, accepting their responsibilities as Jewish adults. First and foremost it was to remember that we only keep what we give away, and that there is a lot of reward in being of service to others. We are all part of Klal Yisrael—we are all one. Second, everything counts, and there is meaning in every moment of every day. We all can make a difference. Our service to the community has brought Renee and me a lot of satisfaction and peace. We feel blessed to have a strong foundation within the synagogue, but realize that our important work continues in order to ensure Adath's well-being for this and future generations. It is essential that we focus on where gifts are needed most. As the holiday of Hanukkah arrives, we invite you to get started on establishing your legacy at Adath by joining us in ensuring Adath's vital future.
