Dear Adath Members,
The Adath Jeshurun Congregation Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that we have hired Joanna Dulkin as our new Cantor, effective July 1, 2017.
Hazzan Dulkin is a recognized national leader in today's cantorate. Among her many contributions to the Conservative movement, she was the only congregational Cantor selected to participate in creating our movement's latest prayer book, Siddur Lev Shalem. As a gifted composer, she has introduced new melodies on local and national levels. As a skilled educator, she teaches song leaders at the Songleader Boot Camp national conference, and clergy at the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.
For the past thirteen years in the cantorate, Hazzan Dulkin has successfully engaged members of all ages in her congregations, including significant connections with preschool age families. Among other accomplishments, she implemented a highly successful Bar and Bat Mitzvah program, creating meaningful experiences for young adults and their families to engage them in lifelong learning. Her joyful and spiritual davening at Shabbat has a loyal following. We are thrilled she will bring these many talents and skills to Adath.
Selecting among the candidates was not an easy task for our Search Committee. Throughout our process, we focused on evaluating the candidates' differing strengths relative to the qualities and priorities we heard from the congregation at numerous small and large group meetings held at the end of last year. It was also important to consider the candidates’ qualifications for the many and diverse aspects of this role, as described in our Cantor's job description.
Our extensive search process led us to invite three very qualified and engaging candidates for weekend visits. We enjoyed and appreciated the talents and energy of each, and we asked them to articulate the vision they would bring to enhancing our educational programs and our spiritual and musical life. Significant feedback from the congregation, lay leaders, rabbis and staff during and following the visits was also an important part of our assessment. Our members were very enthusiastic about Hazzan Dulkin, citing her "great energy and connection with the younger children," and that "she is joyful," and "leads services in a spiritual way," with “a beautiful voice.”
As the evaluation process evolved, it became clear to the Search Committee that Hazzan Dulkin is the right fit for our congregation, now and into the future. Our Committee unanimously made that recommendation to the Board of Trustees, and last night the Board unanimously voted to approve hiring Hazzan Dulkin.
We are excited to welcome Hazzan Dulkin, her husband Rabbi Ryan Dulkin and their two sons, Zac, 13 and Jesse, 10, to Adath this summer. Hazzan Dulkin told us: “I can’t wait to join the fantastic clergy team at the Adath, and to begin the next chapter of our family’s journey. I already feel so welcomed and embraced by all of you, and am excited for our partnership to begin.”
Thank you to the Search Committee for their hard work on behalf of all of us. And thank you for your role in helping to select our new Cantor. Our synagogue has a national reputation for excellence within the Conservative movement. That reputation helped us draw such a high caliber of candidates. But you helped the candidates fall in love with Adath. Each candidate remarked on how impressed they were by how caring and committed our programming, custodial and other staff are and how warm and engaging our congregants are. Kol hakavod to all of us.
