Study Groups
Enjoy informal learning and discussion with great people in a variety of study groups which meet regularly in congregants’ homes, places of work and at the synagogue. Led by our rabbis and other outstanding educators, topics include Bible, Talmud, contemporary Jewish philosophy, family relationships, ethics and more. Study groups are a good way to get to know others, too. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.
Tuesday Torah Study Group
Every Tuesday at noon an eager group of learners meets to discuss the weekly Torah portion and other topics, led by our rabbis with occasional participation of guests and group members. This great group welcomes new participants as drop-ins or “regulars”. Discussion is always provocative! Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.
Talmud Study Group
Most Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. following minyan you’ll find an enthusiastic group of learners studying Talmud in the original with English translation. Get your feet wet in “the sea of Talmud” and you will be rewarded with mind-bending discussion, juicy rabbinic stories and new insights. Contact Nina Samuels at 952.215.3904, ninas@adath.net.
Hebrew Classes and Conversation
Learn the alef-bet, practice your reading and prayer skills, understand the words of the prayers or study Bible in the original. Adath offers Hebrew and prayer skills classes on several levels, plus an ongoing Biblical Hebrew study group and a great “rusty” Hebrew speakers’ conversation group. Participants at all levels will become more skilled and confident. Parents are especially encouraged to participate as their children learn. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.
Torah Reading for Adults
Experience the awe of reading from the Torah. Learn basic Torah reading skills and begin to prepare a short reading for a Shabbat later in the year. Classes meet on Shabbat mornings. Review and advanced Torah reading as well as other trope classes are also offered on an occasional basis. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.
Adult Bat/Bar Torah Program
Join an eager group of questioners! Join Adath’s adult Bat and Bar Torah program; you will come to better understand the Shabbat Morning Service and gain new skills, and your experience of prayer will become more meaningful.
The Bat and Bar Torah Program is comprised of a core class “Finding Meaning in Jewish Prayer”, accompanied by study of Hebrew and prayer skills at a choice of levels. Most classes take place on Sunday mornings, with occasional Shabbat morning classes. The series begins in the fall and concludes with a group celebration of Bat and Bar Torah during Shavuot in the spring. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.
Introduction to Judaism
Adath Jeshurun, Beth El and B’nai Emet synagogues offer a joint Introduction to Judaism course weekly on Tuesday evenings, beginning in the fall and concluding in June. The course is taught by rabbis of these three Conservative congregations. Introduction to Judaism is open to Jews, non-Jews, people who have grown up in interfaith families and those considering conversion. It especially enables people who are considering conversion and their partners to study Judaism seriously as they struggle with the religious and personal questions that are raised in this soul-searching process. Anyone interested in enrolling through Adath Jeshurun must first speak with Rabbi Harold Kravitz at 952.545.2424.

Basic Judaism for Interfaith Couples and Others
Would you or someone you know appreciate a short overview of Judaism and Jewish life—as an introduction, or perhaps to fill in gaps in your background? Adath offers a short, informal course in Basic Judaism each winter, taught by our rabbis, cantors and educators. This six-session course explores Jewish holidays, life-cycle rituals and the basic tenets of Jewish belief. It is open to Jews, non-Jews, interfaith couples and adult children of interfaith parents. Special attention is given to discussing these themes with sensitivity to what they mean in the context of an interfaith relationship, with no assumption of conversion. Basic Judaism meets on Tuesday evenings in the winter. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.
Other Adult Learning Programs
Besides core skills classes and study groups, watch for Adath’s spectacular Sampler of Jewish Culture on a festive Saturday night each January, a fun and stimulating annual Summer Sampler series, plus other classes and series on provocative topics of current interest. Themes have included Jewish Ethics and the Foods We Eat, Being Jewish in the Workplace, Living Hopefully in a Broken World, Adath Reads and more. Adath’s Senior Scholar Rabbi Barry Cytron regularly teaches a Shabbat or Sunday morning class. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or ninas@adath.net.

Havurot
Are you looking for sustaining Jewish community? A number of Adath members participate in havurot, small Jewish “friendship groups” whose members meet regularly, celebrate Shabbat and holidays and plan activities for themselves with the support of the synagogue. Each havurah is self-sustaining, and most are geared to a specific age or stage of life, such as new parents, widows and “empty-nesters”. New havurot can be formed when sufficient interest is expressed. Contact Nina Samuels, Adult Learning Director, at 952.215.3904 or mail to: ninas@adath.net.
65 Plus Senior Programming: Adath Hillsiders and Etzion Study Group
Welcome to the Adath Hillsiders, active seniors 65 and over, men and women, couples and singles. Each fall Adath Hillsiders enjoy a great Seniors Retreat, an event not to be missed. The Etzion Study Group—monthly discussions on issues that relate to our lives, plus relaxed socializing with friends—is led by Rabbis’ Associate Jim Sherman. Other occasional programs fill out a fun and stimulating schedule of activities. Contact Nina Samuels or Jim Sherman at the synagogue, 952.545.2424 or ninas@adath.net. |
